Tyrod and Cheeseman Fall to Injuries before Spring Game
April 14th, 2008
Well, so far its not exactly the spring practice we were hoping for. Of course we know Tyrod has far more talent than Glennon, but also know that Glennon isn’t god awful when there isn’t any pressure (only when it matters). So of course, after much of spring practice, the Hokies find themselves in a tough spot. It would have been nice to come out of spring practice with a clear picture of who the starting quarterback would be in the fall…and hopefully it was Tyrod Taylor.
This has all changed now as Tyrod Taylor has sprained his foot and likely won’t compete in the Spring Game. Until the injury, Tyrod and Glennon were on even footing statistically (oh god that was the worlds worst pun), repeatedly throwing almost identical numbers, although according to the site I’ve listed below, Glennon threw two picks in the most recent duel. I for one and terribly disappointed not to see Tyrod play.
The other news that the team got hit with is that finding a replacement for Brandon Ore just got a lot more difficult. I was never a big fan of Ore and his ‘come or go’ attitude, but still I admit that he was at least capable and worked well under pressure. Heading into spring practice Cheeseman and Lewis, jr. were expected to be the front runners for the race into the tailback spot. The two redshirt freshmen were expected to have a good go, and coaching staff was leaving an opportunity for the entering freshmen Ryan Williams to move straight up the depth chart. But there’s a problem…
No. 1 tailback Kenny Lewis is out for six months after shoulder surgery. No. 2 tailback Jahre Cheeseman broke his leg during Friday’s scrimmage and his surgery will sit him down until August.
So now we don’t have an official starting quarterback, or really even a hint of who it will be. And then also we don’t have a running back, and we can’t even lean to one direction. This for a team that needed to improve offensive capabilities this season because of the holes in the defense. I guess that wasn’t as easy of a task as we were expecting.
I guess I can sum up this article with: Tyrod Taylor, the future is now. Tyrod Taylor for starting quarterback 2008.

Let’s hope Tyrod can get better from this injury and start to distance himself away from Glennon in terms of consistency in his performance. I’m not looking forward to seeing that #7 on the field in this upcoming season.
